5 Questions To Ask Before Buying A Storage Shed

New England Rent To Own

When it comes to buying a storage shed, there’s a lot to consider. We know the first question you have is around pricing, so we’ll tackle that in a moment. Let’s also consider an arguably more important question, however, and that is about quality. Sure you might be able to find a used storage shed online for cheap that you have to haul away and hope it holds together on the ride and placement on your property – but will it last? It seems like I mention this a lot in our blog posts, but what are your intentions for the shed? Are you looking to clean up the clutter in your yard or garage? Are you going to be storing expensive items that you want to make sure stays dry all year round? So let’s dive into the questions you may not be asking yet, but should be.

1. What will I need if I’m heating the storage shed or camp?

Living in New England, we get those cold winters – I don’t have to tell you that though. So what do we do about the items that we are keeping in a storage shed? Are they susceptible to the cold and will they run okay when spring rolls around? If you are considering keeping your storage shed or camp warm, then we’ll want to start with insulation. This is a very important thing to let your sales rep know when you are purchasing the shed. From here we can have conversations about the windows, doors and if you’d like us to insulate the unit for you or you will be handling that on your own. We will go into all the benefits and how to insulate your camp in an upcoming blog post, but we want to make sure you are thinking about this when you’re getting ready to purchase. A little pre-planning will go a long way in making sure your wooden camp stays warm all winter long.

2. What are my siding options?

When you are making the purchase of a shed, you’ll see a lot of companies offer plywood for siding. This isn’t ideal for a number of reasons, but let’s focus on why we go the extra mile. At New England Rent To Own, we use beautiful pine siding on all of our models. This not only looks great, but it’s designed to be outdoors and handle the harshness of winter and heat of the summer. It’s great to be stained or painted depending on your end goal of how it will look. Because of it’s interlocking feature, pine siding on your unit will be sure to keep out the weather all year round.

If you are trying to match your house and prefer vinyl, we have that option as well. We offer 19 different colors of vinyl siding to match your home. Vinyl siding is known to last for a very long time, and as they say ‘Vinyl is Final’. You won’t have to worry about upkeep in regards to staining or painting, just let us know and we will install the vinyl siding for you!

3. Can I further customize the unit and have things such as lofts or workbenches built in?

Nothing makes us happier than knowing you are taking a storage shed or cabin that we’ve built and making it your own. That being said, as part of our rent to own program, we do ask that you wait until the unit is fully paid off before customizing. If you purchase outright or have paid off the unit, then go for it! In fact, we have a couple blog posts here and here on different things you can build into your shed to help you organize and add your own personality to it!

4. Can you get around the challenges associated with where I want the unit set up?

This is a great question – and one that’s not necessarily answered easily. We encourage you to check out our post on how to prepare your property for your new storage shed. It’s important to talk with our sales rep when you are purchasing your unit so that we can make sure there will be no issues when delivering. Let us reassure you though – we’ve done a lot of deliveries and we’ve seen almost every scenario possible. Because of that, we have the experience to deliver a shed or cabin to right where you are looking to have it set up. We’ve even received comments on our Facebook page as to how well the set up and drop off went, don’t believe us? Check them out!

5. Will someone be available if I have questions, comments or concerns after the purchase?
