Create a DIY Man Cave Shed in 3 Steps

You know that scene in Star Wars, where Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Princess Leia are stranded in a trash compactor? Surrounded by garbage, they struggle to find a way out before the walls close completely and crush them. Perhaps you know this situation all too well. First it was a few decorative vases, then some of your kids’ toys, then that collection of fine china… Before you know it, your home’s walls are closing in on you.

What you need, my friend, is a man cave shed. A backyard man cave is the perfect escape for those times you need to take a step away and reset. Here’s how to create a DIY man cave shed in just 3 steps.

Step 1: Spruce up your shed

If you already own a shed that’s been housing lawn care equipment and the like, you’ll need to do some tidying up prior to redecorating. Chances are, you’ve never given the floors of your shed a thorough cleaning. Remove layers of dust and dirt that have accumulated over the years with a vacuum and mop.

Wiping down walls and windows will help to remove allergens and musty odors. Mildew can be cleaned up with a simple solution:

  • Painted wood sheds: 3/4 cup bleach + gallon of water
  • Unpainted wood sheds: 1 cup of bleach for every 3 cups of water
  • Vinyl wood sheds: 3 cups vinegar + 5 cups water

Scrub the mildew covered surface using a sponge and the bleach solution followed by plain water.

Step 2: Plan your design

Now you can get to the fun part. Sketch your new man cave shed and list out “must haves” and “nice to haves”. There’s nothing worse than sinking 4 hours into a project before realizing your concept isn’t quite working – planning your design beforehand will help you avoid this.

A few ideas for how to use your man cave shed:

  • Personal gym
  • Watch the game
  • Home brewery
  • Virtual sports like indoor cycling
  • Recording studio
  • Band practice
  • Poker practice
  • Start a podcast or YouTube channel
  • Workshop
  • Art studio
  • Arcade
  • Library
  • Pool and darts
  • Video games
  • Mini cinema
  • Hunting lodge

Step 3: Make it happen!

You don’t have to spend an arm and a leg furnishing your man cave shed. Browse Craigslist, the Facebook Marketplace, and Goodwill for second-hand furniture. Or, with a little creativity, you can make use of items tucked away in your basement.

The big perk of a backyard man cave is that you’re never far from indoor plumbing and a kitchen for snack replenishment. Comfort is your main concern, the necessities are just a short walk away.

So what are you waiting for? R2D2 may not be able to keep your home’s walls from closing in on you, but your very own man cave shed can!
